Jihye Sung Wins Bozeman Symphony’s Associate Concertmaster Position
Bozeman, Mont. – The Bozeman Symphony and Music Director Norman Huynh today announced the appointment of Jihye Sung of Bozeman as its new Associate Concertmaster following recent auditions.
“Jihye is a wonderful violinist, and we are thrilled to welcome her as our new Associate Concertmaster,” said Music Director Norman Huynh. “She has been a valuable contributor to Bozeman’s vibrant performing arts community, and I look forward to seeing her make an even greater impact both on and off the stage with the Bozeman Symphony.”
Sung, who has been a member of the Bozeman Symphony since 2022, previously served as a section violinist, principal second violinist, and guest associate concertmaster. She also performs regularly with the Montana Chamber Music Society and the String Orchestra of the Rockies and has taught violin, viola, and chamber music at Montana State University.
“I am honored to step into this position and grateful to Maestro Huynh for his trust,” said Sung. “Making music with this orchestra has been an incredible experience, and I look forward to continuing to collaborate with such a talented and dedicated group of musicians.”
As Associate Concertmaster, Sung will serve as the second highest-ranking member of the violin section, seated next to Concertmaster Carrie Krause in performances. She will also assume the top chair when the Concertmaster is absent.
Originally from South Korea, Sung began playing the violin at age six under the guidance of her parents. Her early musical training took place at Sunhwa Art School in Seoul before she continued her studies in Sydney, Australia. She went on to earn both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Sung has performed as a soloist with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Strings, and the Korean and American Youth Orchestra.
Outside of music, Sung enjoys skiing and spending time with her husband, Wonki—who teaches classical saxophone at MSU—and their two daughters, Eunice and Esther. She performs on a Pietro Antonio Landolfi violin, crafted in 1786.
